It’s no surprise it offers some free vehicle repair guides right on its website. It offers “problem solving” guides if you need a little help figuring out what’s wrong with your car. Based on how your car feels, looks, smells, or sounds, you can troubleshoot the various issues and find solutions right on the website. It offers manuals for most domestic and imported vehicles sold in the U.S. from 1982 to 2012, except for BMW and Mini Cooper. It’s the most comprehensive website on this list, and information is easy to find. ALLDATA also requires pay memberships.PepBoys even lists HaynesOnline as the place to go for car repairs. Instead of individual repair guides, you get an online manual repair book. These repair books offer extensive information on such topics as routine maintenance, tune-up procedures, engine repair, and more.
Haynes isn’t a free website, but it has three membership options.It is designed with the do-it-yourselfer in mind. This site offers numerous mechanical repairs, though it avoids larger projects.This website allows you to search for various topics on basic car repairs. The only downfall of this website is that it isn’t narrowed down by vehicle make and model. Each guide gives you a general idea of how to repair or replace something in your car. Like some other guides, it tells you the parts and tools you’ll need, but it also explains the difficulty of the repair and gives any tips on your project it may have to offer. It’s free, so it’s worth a try for simple fixes. Expect a completely new Chilton experience. See, for a long time I was pushing online repair manuals from Alldata and Mitchell1. I made some money, and in all fairness, they have a great product. The online manuals gave excellent repair information, had the exploded views and wiring diagrams that I needed to fix my car plus kept me up to date on recalls and TSB information. Alldata was bought by AutoZone and they made the decision to release most of their DIY Repair information to the public on their website AutoZone.com. The reality is that many car brands were pulling their repair information off of AutoZone and coverage was getting thin.
I believe AutoZone made the decision that this was no longer helping bring in parts sales and removed the repair information from their website. You can still get their excellent repair information on Alldata or checkout Mitchell1 which I recommend highly as well. Please note, these other methods are illegal and not a recommended way to procure an auto repair manual. Their exhaustive database caters to almost all vehicles manufactured from the 1980s and onwards. They also offer information for even older vehicles but it is not quite as extensive and sometimes you have to call or chat with a representative in order to get what you need. I consider this to be the best auto repair manual because it is the easiest to use (step by step instructions for troubleshooting and repairs) plus contains all the information you will need in one place (detailed diagrams, parts list and even prices for OEM components). In my opinion the information is much harder to find and is not organized as well as with Alldata. One thing that Mitchell1 does a little better is wiring diagrams. When you pull up a wiring diagram you have the option of highlighting a particular circuit in a specific color. This gets more important if you are working on a complex electrical problem. While I would choose Alldata first Mitchell1 or Ondemand5 is easily my second choice. Read more about Mitchell1 here. These repair guides are good starter guides for repairs that are not too in depth and when you don't need a lot of detail. Things like brake jobs and maintenance items can be done easily using these guides.
While I would buy either Alldata Mitchell1 (since they are the same price or less) before I would consider either of these, some people prefer to have a printed guide in their hand. Because of that my hopes were not high as I purchased the Chilton manual, especially since my truck is.The only thing it shows is how to remove the latch up in the trunk lid, the part I needed is where that latch connects inside the trunk. Still a good manual though.I do recommend having both a Chilton and a Haynes manual because they offer different bits of information that can be very helpful. I got both of mine used on Amazon for really cheap.It doesn't cover everything but is still well worth the money.Includes thorough vehicle coverage apart from the specific exclusion noted)Makes it much more difficult for them to run up the bill.It is not very easy to read, and you really need to have at least a little automotive background to understand parts of it.
It tells you everything you need to know about servicing the Camaro, but it doesn't explain some things in sufficient detail for the first-time mechanic. If you need instructions on how to service and maintain a Camaro (for example, tuning a carburetor), this book is probably only bested by its source, the official Chevrolet service manual for your car. However, this Chilton's manual is both less expensive and easier to find, and is an excellent place to start. If you're looking for a restoration guide (meaning you're planning on repairing or rebuilding rather than servicing the car), you'd be better.I highly recommend it.Unfortunately this one is very broad, spreading for more than 20 years, at least 3 different models and several different engines. As the manuals are published overseas they will not always match up exactly to NZ models - names may be different, they may be sold in different years, and engines and other options may be different. Despite being owned by its only major competitor, Chilton’s style has set it apart and ensured these amazing guides continue to be made. “Hold My Oil,” Replies Haynes Designed more for beginners, the first ever Haynes manual was for the Austin 7 Special. Despite the company being founded in 1960, its straightforward and simplified instructions gave it fast popularity in both Europe and America. The current Haynes library includes manuals for not only cars, but also ATVs and motorcycles. All told, over 1,000 different Haynes manuals have been printed over the years. This debate has been going on since Haynes made its debut. This battle is exacerbated by the fact that these two giants have very different methods of handling material. Let’s take a moment to examine the two side by side. Information Chilton Chilton gets into extreme detail, providing written instructions covering every facet of your repair. There are plenty of illustrations, but these are usually meant as a companion to the text instead of being the main focus. The Verdict As Chilton and Haynes are both comprehensive but in very different ways, there can be no clear winner. The use of extra illustrations make the manuals easier to understand for many. You will also want to stick with Haynes for your motorcycle or ATV repairs, as they have an extensive collection available. Use a Chilton Repair Manual When: You have some auto repair experience under your belt and want the most comprehensive descriptions. Chilton’s heavier reliance on text can make it tough for beginners, but once you’ve cracked an engine or two, these more verbose instructions can put you on the level of a professional for a wide range of repairs. While navigating an online manual takes a bit getting used to, ALLDATA has probably the best interface out there and the convenience factor is huge. ALLDATAdiy is often the online version of the battle. While similar in many ways, the user interface and amount of data is the difference. Mitchell1 tends to lose out to ALLDATA simply because the database format is a bit harder to navigate. You may have to dig around a little to get the exact information you want, whereas ALLDATA has it all in one place. Where Mitchell1 shines is in the wiring diagrams. These are set up to be interactive, allowing you to highlight a specific circuit, making it easier to follow complex wiring patterns.Simply click on a vehicle make and model and you’ll get a list of all available manuals for that vehicle by year. Pretty much every vehicle make and model in existence is represented although manuals for some newer vehicles is not yet available. Simply select the manual you’re interested in, add it to your cart, pay via credit card or Paypal, and instantly download your manual. At times, they have a coupon available on their site so you may pay even less. One downside is that there is no set format that all manuals are in. It may be available in PDF format or various other computer files. Fortunately, eManualOnline.com provides instructions on how to use each. It’s a little extra hassle in some cases but worth it since you own the manual and don’t need to worry about monthly subscription fees. HaynesOnline As with Chilton, the Haynes database isn’t as comprehensive as the printed version. However, there are plenty of tips and tricks, as well as guides on how to fix most common issues such as tuning, engine repair, and a bunch of other repairs. It’s still a good value when you think of it but ALLDATA is simply preferred by most mechanics so there’s no incentive unless you get this at a sales price. But the manuals frequently go on sale at Haynes.com so it’s worth checking out. ChiltonDIY Chilton’s online guides are far less comprehensive than their printed counterparts, but that doesn’t mean the database is useless.
In fact, Chilton’s online guides include plenty of diagrams, instructions, videos, recall information, and a whole slew of other features. The lack of any vehicle specific info makes this free guide more limited in its scope than the Big Four. These will help you narrow down a problem based upon your own sensory information so you can get it fixed quick. Each guide gives detailed information on what you’ll need and how to fix problems for the specific vehicle, including crisp photo references. This includes parts numbers and easy-to-follow instructions.
